  • Introduction
  • The purpose of the Legal pages in this website is to summarise the functions of the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Adviser, or the AGLA office, and to explain what legislation is applicable in the Sovereign Base Areas and how legislation is made.  There are links to the texts of documents which provide the legal framework for the Sovereign Base Areas.  The legislation index provides a link to the text of legislation currently in force.

 

  • Functions of the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Adviser
  • The AGLA office is responsible for:
    • providing legal advice to the Administrator on all aspects of the Administration’s business, and on the interpretation of the Treaty of Establishment and the United Kingdom’s Declaration regarding the Administration of the Sovereign Base Areas;
    • drafting and publishing primary and secondary legislation;
    • conducting prosecutions for criminal offences under SBA law;
    • conducting civil litigation in the SBA Courts where the Administration is a party to the proceedings;
  •  Please note that the AGLA office does not give advice to the members of the public.

 

  • The staff
  • The Office is made up of lawyers, translators and other members of staff who provide support services, including:
    • the Attorney General and Legal Adviser who is responsible for providing legal advice to the Administration and for prosecuting criminal cases;
    • 2 Crown Counsel, qualified as lawyers in the Republic of Cyprus, who are responsible for the  conduct of criminal prosecutions and who represent the Administration in civil litigation in the courts of the Sovereign Base Areas;
    • 4 Legislative Counsel, qualified as lawyers in the UK, who are responsible for drafting legislation and for providing legal advice to the Administration.
