IMG 1744sThe new Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre was officially opened on 18 November 2014 by Major General Richard Cripwell, Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas, and Dr Costas Kadis, Republic of Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture. They were joined by numerous other representatives from the SBA Administration, Akrotiri Community, Republic of Cyprus government departments, NGOs, and universities.

The new Centre is the culmination of years of collaborative work between the SBAs, the RoC Ministry of Education and Culture and the Akrotiri community.

The Centre embraces some of the most innovative and environmentally friendly building concepts, including a photovoltaic system on the roof which provides approximately 50% of its energy requirements.

The Centre has been operating at a rented building since 2004. In 2007, it became part of the network of environmental education centres of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cyprus, offering different programs to schools from all over Cyprus, including the Bases. It has so far hosted more than 50,000 school children and more than 25,000 other visitors, including university students, specialized groups and families. The new building will boost these achievements to an even higher extent, in three main dimensions: environmental education, research and ecotourism.
Visitors from across the whole island can now come to see and enjoy the new Centre while taking advantage of the fully-interactive educational experience set against a backdrop of some of the most spectacular wetlands areas on island.
